Lifeguard Training Course
The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding program is to teach participants the knowledge and skills needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. This blended-learning format includes mandatory online course work prior to instructor-led pool and classroom time. More detailed information will be provided at least one week before class. Participants must be able to perform the pre-course skills test. Students should be prepared to swim each day unless otherwise directed by the instructor. Bring a lunch, water bottle, swimsuit and towel. Registration closes Friday Dec 6.
Prerequisites: Minimum age of 15; successfully pass the pre-course skills test, which will be held the first night of class.
Pre-Course Swim test includes: 1) Swim 300 yards continuously; 2) Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke; surface dive 7-10 feet; retrieve a 10-pound object and return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within 1 minute, 40 seconds. 3) Treading water for 2 minutes.
Hello! My name is Melinda Fierro. I am a long-time American Red Cross instructor in Aquatics and First Aid/CPR, with over 25 years of experience as an instructor and 20 years as an instructor trainer. I have worked for a variety of providers including locally both the Stillwater and North St. Paul/Maplewood Community Education departments, as well as, the Maplewood Community Center. I’ve also been previously employed full time with the American Red Cross both here in the Twin Cities Metro Area and San Diego/Los Angeles California in the areas of volunteer services, community education, and workplace programming.
I have experience training all ages, from 6 months to seniors in Water Safety, Lifeguarding, and Workplace programming. I have previous experience training instructors and instructor trainers in both a community and workplace environment.
I’ve been teaching for Stillwater Community Education for three years. I am also a resident of the wonderful community of Stillwater and my three kids attend Stillwater schools.
